Florida Income Tax Calculator

Florida does not tax personal income. At $80,000, a single filer's whole income tax bill for 2026 is the federal one, about $8,770. That rule is written into the state constitution, and it covers retirement income and estates too, which is a large part of why so many people retire here. The state and its counties collect instead through sales tax and local property tax.

What's different about Florida income tax

What the constitution actually says

Article VII, Section 5 of the Florida Constitution does not ban an income tax outright. It says any state tax on the income, estates, or inheritances of Florida residents cannot exceed what could be credited against a similar federal or other-state tax. No such federal credit exists, so the limit is zero. Changing it would take a constitutional amendment approved by 60% of voters.

Retirement and investment income are untaxed

Florida taxes none of your pension, IRA or 401(k) withdrawals, Social Security, interest, dividends, or capital gains, and the same constitutional section rules out an estate or inheritance tax. Federal tax still applies.

The homestead exemption takes up to $50,000 off your home's value

If a Florida home is your permanent residence, the first $25,000 of its assessed value is exempt from all property taxes, including school taxes. A second exemption applies to assessed value above $50,000, for non-school taxes only; it started at $25,000 and is now adjusted for inflation each January. Apply to your county property appraiser on Form DR-501 by March 1.

Save Our Homes caps how fast your assessment can rise

Starting the year after you get the homestead exemption, your home's assessed value can rise by no more than 3% a year, or by the change in the Consumer Price Index if that is lower, however much the market value climbs. For 2026 the cap is 2.7%. For long-time owners the gap between assessed and market value can be large.

Paying property tax early earns a discount

Bills go out in late October or November and are due by March 31. Florida law discounts early payment: 4% in November, 3% in December, 2% in January, and 1% in February.

Sales tax is 6% plus a county surtax

The state rate is 6%, and most counties add a discretionary surtax of up to 2%, so you pay between 6% and 8% depending on the county. Sales tax and property tax are where Florida raises what other states collect through income tax.

Florida Income Tax Brackets (2026)

Florida has no state income tax on wages. There are no brackets, no standard deduction, and no state filing required for wage income. The only mandatory paycheck deductions are federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

How Florida Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Florida
Florida (here) $0 $13,170 —
Alabama $4,102 $17,272 +$4,102
Georgia $4,242 $17,412 +$4,242

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Florida. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Florida state income tax rate for 2026?

Florida has no state income tax on wages — the rate is 0% across all income levels. Only federal income tax applies, with brackets ranging from 10% to 37% depending on your taxable income.

How much income tax will I pay in Florida on a $100,000 salary?

For a single filer earning $100,000 in Florida in 2026, expect approximately $13,170 in federal income tax — for a total income tax of about $13,170, an effective rate of 13.2%. This excludes FICA (Social Security and Medicare), which adds roughly 7.65% on top.

Is Florida's lack of an income tax permanent?

It is in the constitution, so the legislature cannot add one on its own. Article VII, Section 5 limits any tax on residents' income to what could be credited against a similar federal tax, which is nothing. Changing that needs a constitutional amendment approved by 60% of voters.

Does Florida tax retirement income or Social Security?

No. Florida has no personal income tax, so pensions, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, and Social Security are untaxed by the state. There is also no Florida estate or inheritance tax.

When is the deadline for Florida's homestead exemption?

March 1 of the tax year, on Form DR-501 filed with your county property appraiser.

How much do you save paying Florida property tax early?

4% if you pay in November, 3% in December, 2% in January, and 1% in February. On a $5,000 bill, paying in November saves $200.
