A single filer earning $75,000 in Alabama keeps about $58,466 a year, or $2,249 every two weeks, after about $3,127 in Alabama income tax. Alabama withholding is figured after subtracting your federal withholding, so the two are linked: anything that raises federal withholding lowers the state's a little.

Estimate Your Take-Home Pay
2027 figures are projected. Federal brackets and the standard
deduction are computed from chained CPI-U through August 2026. The Social Security
wage base is the SSA's official figure. State figures carry 2026 values
except where a 2027 rate is already enacted, so state tax may be slightly
overstated. Official IRS figures publish in October.

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday —
26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month
(often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Alabama,
that difference is about $105 per check.
Annual take-home is identical either way.
Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.
What's different about a Alabama paycheck
Federal withholding comes off first
Alabama's withholding formula annualizes your pay, then subtracts the standard deduction, your personal and dependent exemptions, and your annual federal withholding before applying 2%, 4%, and 5%. Asking for extra federal withholding on your W-4 slightly reduces Alabama withholding, by 5 cents for each extra dollar of federal tax.
The A-4 sets your exemptions
On Form A-4 you claim single ($1,500), married ($3,000), married filing separately, or head of family, plus dependents. Each dependent is worth $1,000 if your pay is $50,000 or less, $500 up to $100,000, and $300 above. Claim zero and no personal exemption is subtracted.
The standard deduction depends on pay
Withholding uses the same sliding standard deduction as the return: $3,000 for a single employee earning $25,999 or less, $25 less for each $500 above that, and $2,500 from $35,500. For married employees it runs from $8,500 down to $5,000.
City occupational taxes
Some Alabama cities and counties, including Birmingham, charge an occupational tax on pay earned there, and employers withhold it along with state tax. The calculator doesn't include it.
Minimum wage
Alabama has no state minimum wage law, so employers covered by federal law pay at least $7.25 an hour, or $15,080 a year full-time.
For the annual picture, including capital gains, credits, and filing deadlines, see the Alabama income tax calculator.
