Arizona Income Tax Calculator

Arizona taxes income at a flat 2.5% after a standard deduction that tracks the federal one, so a single filer earning $80,000 owes about $1,598 for 2026. A tax law signed in June 2026 brought in the new federal deductions for tips, overtime, and people 65 and older, back to the 2025 tax year.

What's different about Arizona income tax

One rate for everyone

Every Arizona filer pays 2.5% of taxable income, whatever the income or filing status, so Arizona no longer publishes tax tables. The standard deduction is $15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for joint returns for 2025, set by the June 2026 law, and it is indexed the same way as the federal amount. For 2026 the calculator uses the federal figures, $16,100 and $32,200, until Arizona publishes its own.

Tips, overtime, and the senior deduction carry over

House Bill 4168, signed June 13, 2026, lets Arizona filers subtract whatever they deducted on their federal return for qualified tips, qualified overtime pay, and the new deduction for people 65 and older, starting with 2025 returns. For 2025 only, federal car loan interest deducted on the federal return comes off too.

Charitable giving raises the standard deduction

You don't have to itemize to get credit for giving. For 2025, a filer taking the standard deduction adds 34% of their charitable contributions to it. From 2026 the full amount of contributions counts, up to $1,000 for a single filer or $2,000 for a joint return.

Donations that come straight off your tax

Arizona gives dollar-for-dollar credits for donations to certain charities and school tuition organizations. For 2025 the maximums are $495 ($987 joint) for qualifying charitable organizations that help low-income residents, $618 ($1,234 joint) for qualifying foster care organizations, and $769 ($1,535 joint) for private school tuition organizations. Fees and donations paid to public schools earn a separate credit. Donations to charitable and foster care organizations made by April 15 can be claimed on the previous year's return.

A credit for dependents instead of exemptions

Arizona gives a nonrefundable credit of $100 for each dependent under 17 and $25 for each older dependent on 2025 returns. The June 2026 law raises the under-17 amount to $125 from 2026. The credit shrinks for incomes above $200,000, or $400,000 on a joint return.

What Arizona does not tax

Social Security, railroad retirement benefits, interest on U.S. government bonds, pay for active service in the armed forces, Reserves, or National Guard, and military retirement pay are all excluded from Arizona income.

Arizona tax credits (2025 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

Credit Amount Who gets it In calculator
Dependent tax credit $100 per dependent under 17 ($125 from 2026); $25 for older dependents Reduced above $200,000 of federal AGI ($400,000 joint) No

How Arizona Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Arizona
Arizona (here) $2,098 $15,268 —
California $5,055 $18,225 +$2,957
Nevada $0 $13,170 -$2,098
Utah $4,450 $17,620 +$2,353
New Mexico $3,569 $16,739 +$1,472
Colorado $3,692 $16,862 +$1,594

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Arizona. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Arizona state income tax rate for 2026?

For a single filer earning $100,000 in Arizona in 2026, expect approximately $13,170 in federal income tax and $2,098 in Arizona state income tax — for a total income tax of about $15,268, an effective rate of 15.3%. This excludes FICA (Social Security and Medicare), which adds roughly 7.65% on top.

Does Arizona tax tips and overtime?

Not the part you deduct federally. From 2025 returns, Arizona lets you subtract the same qualified tips and overtime you deducted on your federal return, along with the federal deduction for people 65 and older.

What is the Arizona standard deduction?

$15,750 for single filers, $23,625 for heads of household, and $31,500 for joint returns for 2025. It is indexed like the federal deduction, which is $16,100 single for 2026.

How do Arizona tax credit donations work?

A donation to a qualifying charity, foster care organization, or school tuition organization reduces your Arizona tax dollar for dollar, up to each credit's limit. For 2025 that is $495, $618, and $769 respectively for a single filer, about double for a joint return.

Does Arizona tax Social Security or military retirement?

No. Both are excluded from Arizona income, as is interest on U.S. government bonds.
