California Take-Home Pay by Pay Frequency (2026)

The same California take-home figures divided across common pay schedules — what actually lands in your account each payday, after federal tax, FICA, California state income tax, and the CA SDI / PFL premium.

Annual Salary Weekly52/yr Biweekly26/yr Semi-Monthly24/yr Monthly12/yr
$40,000 $639 $1,278 $1,384 $2,768
$60,000 $923 $1,845 $1,999 $3,998
$80,000 $1,171 $2,341 $2,536 $5,073
$100,000 $1,400 $2,801 $3,034 $6,069
$150,000 $1,964 $3,928 $4,256 $8,511
$200,000 $2,538 $5,076 $5,499 $10,998

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month (often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in California, that difference is about $106 per check. Annual take-home is identical either way.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.

What's different about a California paycheck

State Disability Insurance has no cap

California withholds 1.3% of your wages for State Disability Insurance in 2026, which pays for both disability and Paid Family Leave benefits. Since January 1, 2024 there has been no wage limit, so it applies to every dollar: $975 a year on $75,000, $1,950 on $150,000, and $6,500 on $500,000. Other states with similar programs cap them. The tables on this page include SDI, so they match what your paycheck shows.

Withholding runs on its own form, the DE 4

California doesn't use your federal W-4 for state withholding. It uses the DE 4, which still works in allowances. If you never turn one in, your employer must withhold as if you were single with zero allowances, which over-withholds for most married workers. Claiming "exempt" lasts one year: you have to file a new DE 4 by February 15 to keep it.

Bonuses are withheld at 10.23%

When a bonus or stock option income is paid separately from your regular pay, California withholds a flat 10.23%. Other extra pay, such as commissions, severance, and vacation payouts, is withheld at 6.6%. Add the federal 22%, FICA, and SDI, and a $10,000 bonus paid on its own check arrives as about $5,882. That is withholding, not your final tax: your actual rate is settled when you file, so a bonus can mean a refund or a bill in April.

Health savings accounts don't lower California withholding

HSA contributions come out of your pay before federal tax, but California treats them as taxable wages, so they don't reduce your California withholding. 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums paid through your employer are pre-tax for California just as they are federally.

Most workers must be paid at least twice a month

California law requires wages to be paid at least twice each calendar month on regular paydays, with some exceptions such as salaried exempt employees. That is why weekly, biweekly, and semi-monthly schedules are the norm here. The pay-frequency table above shows what each schedule means per check.

Overtime starts after 8 hours in a day

California pays time and a half after 8 hours in a workday as well as after 40 in a week, and double time after 12 hours in a day. Four 10-hour days add up to 40 hours but include 8 hours of overtime under California law. The calculator's hourly mode counts overtime by the week, so enter daily overtime hours yourself if your shifts run long.

The minimum wage is $16.90

California's statewide minimum wage is $16.90 an hour in 2026, or $35,152 for a full-time year. After taxes and SDI that is about $29,579 take-home, or $1,138 every two weeks. Many cities set a higher minimum, and fast food and health care workers have their own higher rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the California state income tax rate?

California has progressive income tax brackets ranging from 1% to 13.3%. Most middle-income earners hit the middle brackets; the top rate applies only above $1,000,000.

How much is taken out of my paycheck in California?

For a single filer earning $75,000 in California (2026): about $7,670 in federal income tax, $5,738 in Social Security and Medicare, $2,775 in California state income tax, and $975 for the CA SDI / PFL premium, leaving about $57,843 a year, or $2,225 per biweekly paycheck.

How much SDI is taken out of a California paycheck?

1.3% of every dollar in 2026, with no wage limit. On $75,000 a year that is $975, or $38 per biweekly check. It funds State Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave.

How much tax is withheld from a bonus in California?

California withholds a flat 10.23% on bonuses paid separately from regular wages, on top of the federal 22%, FICA, and SDI. On a $10,000 bonus that leaves about $5,882. Your actual tax on the bonus is settled when you file your return.

What happens if I don't fill out a California DE 4?

Your employer must withhold California tax as if you were single with zero allowances. That usually takes out more than you owe if you are married or have dependents; you get the difference back when you file.

Does California require overtime after 8 hours?

Yes. Non-exempt employees earn time and a half for hours over 8 in a workday or 40 in a workweek, and double time for hours over 12 in a workday, with extra rules for a seventh consecutive day of work.
