Michigan Take-Home Pay by Pay Frequency (2026)

The same Michigan take-home figures divided across common pay schedules — what actually lands in your account each payday, after federal tax, FICA, and Michigan state income tax.

Annual Salary Weekly52/yr Biweekly26/yr Semi-Monthly24/yr Monthly12/yr
$40,000 $632 $1,264 $1,370 $2,739
$60,000 $925 $1,850 $2,004 $4,008
$80,000 $1,192 $2,383 $2,582 $5,163
$100,000 $1,446 $2,892 $3,133 $6,265
$150,000 $2,071 $4,141 $4,486 $8,972
$200,000 $2,705 $5,411 $5,862 $11,723

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month (often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Michigan, that difference is about $105 per check. Annual take-home is identical either way.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.

What's different about a Michigan paycheck

Detroit takes 2.4% of residents' pay

Detroit's income tax is 2.4% for residents and 1.2% for people who work in the city but live elsewhere. Employers with a Detroit location withhold it from everyone working in the city, and from Detroit residents wherever they work. On $75,000 that is $1,786 a year for a resident after the $600 personal exemption, or $69 per biweekly check.

23 other cities tax income too

Lansing, Flint, and most of the other 23 cities charge 1% to residents and 0.5% to nonresidents who work there; Grand Rapids charges 1.5% and 0.75%, Highland Park charges 2% and 1%, Saginaw charges 1.5% and 0.75%. If you live in one taxing city and work in another, the work city's tax is credited against your home city's, up to the home city's nonresident rate. The tax applies to taxable wages, so 401(k) contributions lower it. The calculator above includes every city. If your employer doesn't withhold for your city, you may owe it when you file the city return.

A flat 4.25% on wages and bonuses alike

Michigan withholds 4.25% of your pay above the exemptions you claim on Form MI-W4, which are worth $5,900 each for 2026. A bonus paid separately is withheld at the same 4.25%, so a $10,000 bonus comes to about $6,610 after the federal 22%, Michigan tax, and FICA.

The minimum wage is $13.73

Michigan's minimum wage rose to $13.73 an hour on January 1, 2026, or $28,558 for a full-time year, about $24,163 after federal and state tax. Tipped workers can be paid $5.49 an hour if tips bring them to the full rate, and 16- and 17-year-olds can be paid $11.67.
