Tennessee Income Tax Calculator

Tennessee has not taxed any personal income since 2021, when its last income tax, on interest and dividends, ended. Its constitution also bars a tax on wages. A single filer earning $80,000 owes only federal income tax, about $8,770 for 2026. The state relies on sales tax instead, and a small group of licensed professionals pay a flat $400 a year.

What's different about Tennessee income tax

The constitution bars a tax on wages

A 2014 amendment to Article II, Section 28 of the Tennessee Constitution, known as the "No State Income Tax" amendment, forbids the legislature from levying or authorizing any state or local tax on payroll or earned personal income, or any tax measured by them. Cities and counties are covered too, so there is no local income tax either.

The Hall tax on investment income is gone

Until 2020 Tennessee taxed interest and dividends under the Hall income tax. Lawmakers cut the rate by a point a year, from 4% in 2017 to 1% in 2020, and repealed it for tax years beginning January 1, 2021. Interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, and Social Security are now all untaxed by the state.

A $400 tax on five professions

The professional privilege tax is the closest thing Tennessee has to an income tax, though it is a flat fee rather than a percentage. It is $400 a year, due June 1, for anyone licensed or registered in Tennessee as an attorney, securities agent, broker-dealer, investment adviser, or lobbyist. Someone in more than one of those professions pays it once.

Sales tax is the main source of revenue

Sales tax brings in about 60% of Tennessee's state tax collections. The state rate is 7%, and counties and cities add up to 2.75% more. Groceries are taxed too, at a reduced 4% state rate plus the local rate. From November 1, 2026, Davidson County (Nashville) cuts its local rate on groceries to 1.75% from 2.25%, so food there is taxed at 5.75%.

Nothing to file with the state

Tennessee has no individual income tax return and no state withholding form. You file only your federal return. Professionals who owe the privilege tax file that separately with the Department of Revenue.

Tennessee Income Tax Brackets (2026)

Tennessee has no state income tax on wages. There are no brackets, no standard deduction, and no state filing required for wage income. The only mandatory paycheck deductions are federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

How Tennessee Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Tennessee
Tennessee (here) $0 $13,170 —
Kentucky $3,382 $16,552 +$3,382
Virginia $4,936 $18,106 +$4,936
North Carolina $3,481 $16,651 +$3,481
Georgia $4,242 $17,412 +$4,242
Alabama $4,102 $17,272 +$4,102

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Tennessee. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.
