Idaho Income Tax Calculator

Idaho taxes income at a single 5.3% rate, but only above a zero-rate threshold: about the first $4,811 of taxable income for single filers, after the federal standard deduction. A single filer earning $80,000 owes about $3,142 for 2026, including a flat $10 building fund tax. Parents lose the $205 child tax credit this year, because the law that created it expired after 2025.

What's different about Idaho income tax

Three rate cuts since 2022

Idaho had graduated brackets up to 6% through 2022. It moved to one rate above a zero-rate threshold in 2023 at 5.8%, then 5.695% for 2024 and 5.3% from 2025. The threshold, $4,811 single and $9,622 joint for 2025, rises with inflation each year; heads of household and surviving spouses use the joint amount.

The child tax credit ended with 2025

Idaho's $205 nonrefundable credit per qualifying child applied to tax years beginning before January 1, 2026. It isn't available for 2026 returns, and in July 2026 the Tax Commission set the child tax credit withholding allowance to zero. A family with two children loses $410 of credit.

A $10 tax and a $155 credit

Everyone required to file an Idaho return pays a $10 permanent building fund tax on top of income tax, unless they are blind or receiving Idaho public assistance. On the other side, the Food Tax Credit, formerly the grocery credit, is $155 per person for 2025, and people with no filing requirement can file just to get it refunded.

Social Security exempt; some pensions too

Social Security and railroad retirement benefits are subtracted on the Idaho return. Qualifying retirees can also deduct certain public and military retirement benefits, up to $48,216 single or $72,324 joint for 2025, reduced by any Social Security received.

Idaho tax credits (2025 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

Food Tax Credit $155 per person; refundable Idaho residents, including those not required to file No

How Idaho Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Idaho
Idaho (here) $4,202 $17,372 —
Washington $0 $13,170 -$4,202
Oregon $7,148 $20,318 +$2,946
Nevada $0 $13,170 -$4,202
Utah $4,450 $17,620 +$248
Wyoming $0 $13,170 -$4,202

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Idaho. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.
