Massachusetts Take-Home Pay by Pay Frequency (2026)

The same Massachusetts take-home figures divided across common pay schedules — what actually lands in your account each payday, after federal tax, FICA, Massachusetts state income tax, and the MA PFML premium.

Annual Salary Weekly52/yr Biweekly26/yr Semi-Monthly24/yr Monthly12/yr
$40,000 $622 $1,244 $1,348 $2,696
$60,000 $910 $1,821 $1,972 $3,945
$80,000 $1,172 $2,345 $2,540 $5,080
$100,000 $1,422 $2,844 $3,081 $6,162
$150,000 $2,035 $4,070 $4,409 $8,818
$200,000 $2,660 $5,319 $5,762 $11,525

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month (often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Massachusetts, that difference is about $104 per check. Annual take-home is identical either way.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.

What's different about a Massachusetts paycheck

Paid leave: up to 0.46% of wages

For 2025 and 2026 the paid family and medical leave contribution is 0.88% of wages up to the Social Security wage base. Your employer can take the whole family leave share from your pay, 0.18%, and up to 40% of the medical leave share, 0.28%, for a maximum of 0.46%. Employers with 25 or more workers pay the remaining 0.42%; smaller employers owe no share of their own. Some employers cover part of the employee share, so your stub may show less. The tables on this page use the full 0.46%.

The paid leave split changes in 2027

Chapter 101 of the Acts of 2026 moves the employer share from medical leave to family leave from January 1, 2027, in response to IRS guidance on how benefits are taxed. Employers with 25 or more workers will be able to withhold up to all of the medical leave contribution and 40% of the family leave contribution. The 2027 rate is set by October 1; until it is announced, the calculator's 2027 figures keep the 2026 deduction.

Withholding at 5%

Massachusetts withholds 5% of wages after the allowances you claim on Form M-4, and adds the 4% surtax rate on wages above $1,107,750 for 2026. Very high earners with large bonuses or stock compensation should check that enough is withheld to cover the surtax.

Minimum wage and tipped workers

The minimum wage has been $15.00 an hour since January 1, 2023, the last step of a five-year schedule; no further increase is scheduled. Tipped workers who earn more than $20 a month in tips can be paid a $6.75 service rate, with tips making up the difference. Full-time at $15.00 is $31,200 a year, about $25,766 after taxes and paid leave.

Renters get it back at tax time

Nothing on a Massachusetts paycheck reflects the rental deduction. If you rent, half your rent, up to $4,000, comes off your taxable income when you file, worth up to $200. Withholding is based on the M-4, so the saving usually arrives as a refund.
