What's different about Montana income tax

A two-year cut under HB 337

House Bill 337 (2025) widens the 4.7% bracket to $47,500 single, $71,250 head of household, and $95,000 joint for 2026, with 5.65% above. For 2027 the 4.7% bracket reaches $65,000 single ($130,000 joint) and the top rate falls to 5.4%. A single filer earning up to about $63,600 now pays only the lower rate.

It starts from federal taxable income

Montana taxable income begins with federal taxable income, without the federal qualified business income deduction, so the federal standard deduction ($16,100 single for 2026) is already subtracted and Montana has no separate exemptions. Long-term capital gains are taxed at 3.0% and 4.1% instead of the ordinary rates, with brackets matched to the new ordinary ranges.

Social Security is taxed; seniors get a subtraction

Montana taxes Social Security to the same extent the federal return does. Taxpayers 65 or older get a $5,500 subtraction instead ($11,000 if both spouses on a joint return qualify), adjusted for inflation from 2025.

A bigger earned income credit

HB 337 also raises the Montana earned income tax credit to 20% of the federal credit from 2026.

Montana tax credits (2026 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

2026 update:Effective 1/1/2026. Montana's top rate was reduced from 5.9% to 5.65%; the lower bracket (4.7%) is unchanged.

Brackets shown are marginal: each rate applies only to the portion of taxable income within that bracket, not your total income. Taxable income equals gross wages minus pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction.

How Montana Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Montana
Montana (here) $4,289 $17,459 —
Idaho $4,202 $17,372 -$87
Wyoming $0 $13,170 -$4,289
South Dakota $0 $13,170 -$4,289
North Dakota $669 $13,839 -$3,620

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Montana. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.
