What's different about Nebraska income tax

Four brackets, now three rates

Nebraska keeps four indexed brackets, but for 2026 the top two share the 4.55% rate. Single filers pay 2.46% on the first $4,130 of taxable income, 3.51% up to $24,760, and 4.55% above; joint brackets are about twice as wide. In 2025 the rates were 5.01% and 5.2% above $24,120 and $38,870.

A deduction and a credit per person

The Nebraska standard deduction is $8,850 single and $17,700 joint for 2026. Residents also take a personal exemption credit of $176 for each exemption, you, your spouse, and each dependent, off the tax itself, up from $171 for 2025.

Social Security and military pensions are exempt

All Social Security benefits included in federal AGI can be subtracted; the exclusion no longer has an income limit. Military retirees can exclude 100% of their military retirement pay.

A credit for community college property taxes

Nebraska property owners can claim an income tax credit for the community college portion of the property taxes they paid, computed on Form PTC with the Department of Revenue's property tax look-up tool. It doesn't cover taxes for bonded debt or voter-approved levy overrides.

Nebraska tax credits (2026 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

2026 update:Effective 1/1/2026 under LB754. Nebraska reduced the third bracket rate from 5.01% to 4.55% and merged the former top bracket (5.20%) into it — collapsing four brackets into three. The rate is scheduled to drop again to 3.99% in 2027.

Brackets shown are marginal: each rate applies only to the portion of taxable income within that bracket, not your total income. Taxable income equals gross wages minus pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction.

South Dakota $0 $13,170 -$3,670
Iowa $3,148 $16,318 -$522
Missouri $3,670 $16,840 -$1
Kansas $4,780 $17,950 +$1,110
