Iowa Income Tax Calculator

Iowa taxes income at a single 3.8% rate, and it starts from your federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction and most federal deductions carry straight over. A single filer earning $80,000 owes about $2,388 for 2026. Where you live can add more: most school districts charge an income surtax on top of the state tax.

What's different about Iowa income tax

Federal taxable income is the starting point

Since 2023 the Iowa return begins with the federal taxable income from line 15 of your Form 1040, and Iowa automatically follows changes to the Internal Revenue Code unless state law says otherwise. That means the federal standard deduction, $16,100 single or $32,200 joint for 2026, is already subtracted, and so are the new federal deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest, and seniors. Iowa then adds a $40 personal exemption credit, $80 on a joint or head of household return, plus $40 per dependent.

One rate since 2025

Senate File 2442, enacted in May 2024, replaced Iowa's graduated brackets with a flat 3.8% rate from 2025, and the Department of Revenue confirms the same rate for all taxable income in 2026.

A school district surtax on top

Most Iowa school districts add a surtax, figured as a percentage of your Iowa tax after credits and set by the district you live in on December 31. For 2025 the rates run from 0% to 20%: Des Moines and Davenport charge none, Iowa City 4%, and Cedar Rapids 5%, which would add about $119 to the $80,000 example. Six counties add a 1% emergency medical services surtax. You owe it whether or not you have children in public school. The calculator doesn't include it.

Retirement income is exempt at 55

Iowa doesn't tax Social Security benefits. Pensions, IRA and 401(k) distributions, and other retirement plan income are excluded for anyone 55 or older, disabled, or a qualifying surviving spouse. Military retirement pay is excluded too.

Iowa tax credits (2025 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

Credit Amount Who gets it In calculator
Personal exemption credit $40, or $80 on a joint or head of household return; $20 more each for 65 or older or blind All filers Yes
Dependent credit $40 per dependent Filers with dependents claimed federally No
Iowa earned income tax credit 15% of the federal EITC; refundable Filers who qualify for the federal EITC No

How Iowa Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Iowa
Iowa (here) $3,148 $16,318 —
Minnesota $5,277 $18,447 +$2,128
Wisconsin $4,428 $17,598 +$1,279
Illinois $4,805 $17,975 +$1,657
Missouri $3,670 $16,840 +$522
Nebraska $3,670 $16,840 +$522

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Iowa. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.
