What's different about Oklahoma income tax

Three rates instead of six

HB 2764 replaced six brackets running from 0.25% to 4.75% with a 0% band and three rates. Single filers and married people filing separately pay nothing on the first $3,750, 2.5% on the next $1,150, 3.5% on the next $2,300, and 4.5% above $7,200. Joint filers and heads of household have bands twice as wide, with 4.5% above $14,400.

More cuts are built in

Each time the State Board of Equalization certifies that revenue has grown past a set threshold, every rate drops by 0.25 percentage point, continuing until it reaches zero. The first test is at the Board's December 2026 meeting, and any cut takes effect the January after the final February certification.

A fixed standard deduction and exemption

The standard deduction is $6,350 for single filers and $12,700 for joint returns, and each person gets a $1,000 exemption. Oklahoma allows no deduction for federal income tax. Itemized deductions are capped at $17,000; from 2027, gambling losses deductible federally are exempt from that cap.

Credits for school choice

The statewide cap on the Parental Choice Tax Credit rises from $250 million to $275 million for fiscal 2027. Donors to a scholarship granting organization can claim a state credit of 50% of the gift, up to $1,000 per taxpayer or $2,000 on a joint return.

Oklahoma tax credits (2026 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

2026 update:Effective 1/1/2026. Oklahoma collapsed six brackets into three (2.5% / 3.5% / 4.5%) under HB 2764.

Brackets shown are marginal: each rate applies only to the portion of taxable income within that bracket, not your total income. Taxable income equals gross wages minus pre-tax deductions, the standard deduction, and the personal exemption.

How Oklahoma Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Oklahoma
Oklahoma (here) $3,955 $17,125 —
Texas $0 $13,170 -$3,955
New Mexico $3,569 $16,739 -$385
Colorado $3,692 $16,862 -$263
Kansas $4,780 $17,950 +$826
Missouri $3,670 $16,840 -$285

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Oklahoma. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.
