Texas Income Tax Calculator

Texas has no state income tax, and since 2019 its constitution forbids one. Your income tax bill is federal only: a single filer earning $80,000 owes about $8,770 in federal income tax for 2026 and nothing to Texas. The state raises its money through property and sales taxes instead, so the useful question for a Texan is total tax, not income tax.

What's different about Texas income tax

The constitution bans an income tax, and more

Article 8, Section 24-a of the Texas Constitution, added by voters in 2019, says the legislature may not tax the net incomes of individuals. Voters have since added bans on a wealth tax (2023) and, in November 2025, on a capital gains tax and on estate, inheritance, and gift taxes. Undoing any of them would take a constitutional amendment: a two-thirds vote in both chambers of the legislature, then a statewide vote.

Nothing to file with the state

Texas has no individual income tax return. You file only your federal Form 1040, and your employer withholds only federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

Investment and retirement income are untaxed too

With no income tax, Texas taxes none of your wages, interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, IRA or 401(k) withdrawals, or Social Security. Federal tax still applies to all of them as usual.

Property tax does the heavy lifting

Texas has no state property tax; school districts, counties, cities, and special districts each set their own rate on your home's appraised value, and together they make up most of a Texas homeowner's tax bill. Every school district must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value, plus another $60,000 if you are 65 or older or disabled, and any local taxing unit may add an exemption of up to 20%. Apply to your county appraisal district before May 1. Bills go out from October 1 and are due by January 31.

Sales tax runs up to 8.25%

The state charges 6.25% and cities, counties, and special districts can add up to 2% more, for a combined rate of up to 8.25%. See Texas city rates on the sales tax calculator.

Businesses pay the franchise tax, not income tax

Texas taxes businesses on their margin through the franchise tax. For reports due in 2026, an entity with annualized total revenue of $2.65 million or less owes no franchise tax and does not file a no-tax-due report, though it still files an information report.

Moving here mid-year

Moving to Texas stops state income tax from the day you become a resident, not from January 1. Your previous state can still tax what you earned while you lived there, usually on a part-year resident return, so expect one more state return for the year you move.

Texas Income Tax Brackets (2026)

Texas has no state income tax on wages. There are no brackets, no standard deduction, and no state filing required for wage income. The only mandatory paycheck deductions are federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

How Texas Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Texas
Texas (here) $0 $13,170 —
New Mexico $3,569 $16,739 +$3,569
Oklahoma $3,955 $17,125 +$3,955
Arkansas $3,492 $16,662 +$3,492
Louisiana $2,614 $15,784 +$2,614

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Texas. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Texas state income tax rate for 2026?

Texas has no state income tax on wages — the rate is 0% across all income levels. Only federal income tax applies, with brackets ranging from 10% to 37% depending on your taxable income.

How much income tax will I pay in Texas on a $100,000 salary?

For a single filer earning $100,000 in Texas in 2026, expect approximately $13,170 in federal income tax — for a total income tax of about $13,170, an effective rate of 13.2%. This excludes FICA (Social Security and Medicare), which adds roughly 7.65% on top.

Can Texas add an income tax in the future?

Not without amending the constitution. Section 24-a of Article 8 has barred a tax on individuals' net incomes since 2019, so an income tax would need a two-thirds vote in both chambers of the legislature and approval by voters.

Does Texas tax Social Security, pensions, or capital gains?

No. Texas has no individual income tax, so none of these are taxed by the state, and a 2025 constitutional amendment separately bans a state capital gains tax. Federal tax still applies.

Do I need to file a Texas state tax return?

No. There is no Texas individual income tax return. You file only your federal return.

How much less income tax do you pay in Texas than in California?

On a $100,000 salary for a single filer in 2026, total income tax is about $13,170 in Texas (all federal) against about $18,225 in California, a difference of $5,055. Property and sales taxes narrow that gap, depending on where you live and whether you own a home.
