Virginia Take-Home Pay by Pay Frequency (2026)

The same Virginia take-home figures divided across common pay schedules — what actually lands in your account each payday, after federal tax, FICA, and Virginia state income tax.

Annual Salary Weekly52/yr Biweekly26/yr Semi-Monthly24/yr Monthly12/yr
$40,000 $631 $1,263 $1,368 $2,736
$60,000 $918 $1,837 $1,990 $3,980
$80,000 $1,179 $2,359 $2,555 $5,110
$100,000 $1,428 $2,856 $3,094 $6,187
$150,000 $2,038 $4,076 $4,416 $8,832
$200,000 $2,658 $5,317 $5,760 $11,520

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month (often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Virginia, that difference is about $105 per check. Annual take-home is identical either way.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.

What's different about a Virginia paycheck

Withholding gives each job one single-filer deduction

Virginia's withholding formula subtracts $8,750 and $930 for each exemption on your VA-4, whether you are single or married. That works for two-earner couples, whose two paychecks add up to the $17,500 joint deduction. If only one spouse works, withholding misses half of it, so expect about $503 back when you file. Claiming your spouse on the VA-4 adds their $930 exemption but does not close that gap.

No VA-4 means no exemptions

If you never give your employer a Form VA-4, Virginia tax is withheld as if you claimed no exemptions, about $53 a year more than for someone claiming themselves. You don't have to have Virginia tax withheld at all if you expect Virginia adjusted gross income below $11,950 single or $23,900 married, or if you owed no Virginia tax last year and expect to owe none this year.

Bonuses: combined with pay, or a flat 5.75%

A bonus paid with regular wages is added to them and withheld on the total. A bonus paid separately can be withheld on the difference it makes to a regular check, or, if tax is already being withheld from your wages, at a flat 5.75%. With the federal 22%, Social Security, and Medicare, a $10,000 bonus at the flat rate arrives as about $6,460.

Commuting in from Maryland, D.C., or elsewhere

Employers don't withhold Virginia tax from people who live in Kentucky or Washington, D.C. and commute daily into Virginia. The same goes for residents of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia whose only Virginia income is wages, if those wages are taxed by their home state. Each files a VA-4 claiming the exemption.

How often you must be paid

Virginia law requires hourly employees to be paid at least every two weeks or twice a month, and salaried employees at least once a month. Two groups can be paid monthly if they agree to it: students in work-study programs, and employees earning more than 150% of the state's average weekly wage. When you leave a job, your final wages are due by the payday they would normally have been paid on. An employer can't withhold anything from your pay beyond taxes and other legally required deductions without your written consent.

Paid family leave premiums start in April 2028

Virginia enacted paid family and medical leave in 2026. Workers and employers, and self-employed people who opt in, will pay a contribution starting April 1, 2028, and benefits begin December 1, 2028. The rate hasn't been set; the Virginia Employment Commission sets it by October 1, 2027. Employers can choose to cover part of the employee share.

Minimum wage rises to $15 by 2028

Virginia's minimum wage is $12.77 an hour in 2026. Legislation signed in April 2026 raises it to $13.75 on January 1, 2027 and $15.00 on January 1, 2028. Full-time at the 2026 rate is about $26,562 a year, leaving roughly $22,770 after taxes.
