Illinois Income Tax Calculator

Illinois taxes income at a flat 4.95% after a $2,925 personal exemption for 2026, which works out to $3,815 on an $80,000 salary. The flat rate is written into the state constitution, and Illinois is one of the few states that leaves nearly all retirement income untaxed.

What's different about Illinois income tax

One flat rate, set by the constitution

Every dollar of Illinois net income is taxed at 4.95%, whatever you earn. The only thing subtracted first is the personal exemption, $2,925 per person for 2026 (up from $2,850 for 2025), plus the same again for a spouse and each dependent.

The exemption disappears above $250,000

If your federal adjusted gross income is over $250,000 ($500,000 on a joint return), you get no exemption at all. It is a cliff, not a phase-out: one dollar over the limit costs $145 more tax for a single filer. The same limits cut off the property tax and K-12 education credits. At $260,000 a single filer owes about $12,870. The calculator applies the cutoff.

Retirement income is almost entirely untaxed

Illinois lets you subtract Social Security, railroad retirement, pensions, and qualified distributions from retirement plans such as 401(k)s and IRAs, as long as they are included in your federal income. Few states exempt all of these at once, which makes Illinois unusually light on retirees despite its reputation.

Credits for homeowners and parents

Homeowners can claim 5% of the property tax paid on their main home as a credit, and parents can claim a credit for K-12 education expenses of up to $750. Both are unavailable above the $250,000 / $500,000 income limits. Families that receive the Illinois earned income credit and have a child under 12 also get a child tax credit worth 40% of it.

Illinois tax credits (2025 returns)

Credits come off the tax itself, after the brackets. The calculator applies only the ones marked; the rest depend on your family and income, so subtract any you qualify for from the estimate.

Credit Amount Who gets it In calculator
Property tax credit 5% of property tax paid on your main home Homeowners, federal AGI up to $250,000 ($500,000 joint) No
K-12 education expense credit Up to $750 Parents of K-12 students, same income limits No
Illinois earned income tax credit Based on your federal EITC Workers who qualify for the federal credit, and some who don't No
Illinois child tax credit 40% of your Illinois EITC Illinois EITC recipients with a dependent child under 12 No

How Illinois Income Tax Compares to Neighboring States

Total income tax (federal + state) on a $100,000 annual salary in 2026, single filer using the standard deduction:

State State Tax Total Income Tax vs. Illinois
Illinois (here) $4,805 $17,975 —
Wisconsin $4,428 $17,598 -$378
Iowa $3,148 $16,318 -$1,657
Missouri $3,670 $16,840 -$1,135
Kentucky $3,382 $16,552 -$1,423
Indiana $2,921 $16,091 -$1,885

A negative "vs." figure means that state collects less total income tax than Illinois. Federal portion is identical across states; only state tax varies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Illinois state income tax rate for 2026?

Illinois has a flat 4.95% state income tax rate for 2026. The rate is the same regardless of income — applied to taxable income after the personal exemption. Federal rates (10%–37%) layer on top.

How much income tax will I pay in Illinois on a $100,000 salary?

For a single filer earning $100,000 in Illinois in 2026, expect approximately $13,170 in federal income tax and $4,805 in Illinois state income tax — for a total income tax of about $17,975, an effective rate of 18%. This excludes FICA (Social Security and Medicare), which adds roughly 7.65% on top.

What is the Illinois personal exemption for 2026?

$2,925 per person, up from $2,850 for 2025. You lose it entirely if your federal adjusted gross income is over $250,000, or $500,000 on a joint return.

Does Illinois tax retirement income?

Generally no. Social Security, railroad retirement, pensions, and qualified retirement plan distributions included in your federal income can be subtracted on the Illinois return.

Why did my Illinois tax jump when my income crossed $250,000?

Above $250,000 of federal AGI ($500,000 joint) Illinois disallows the personal exemption entirely, along with the property tax and K-12 education credits.

Does Chicago have a city income tax?

No. Neither Chicago nor any other Illinois city or county taxes personal income. The 4.95% state rate is the whole income tax.
