Illinois Take-Home Pay by Pay Frequency (2026)

The same Illinois take-home figures divided across common pay schedules — what actually lands in your account each payday, after federal tax, FICA, and Illinois state income tax.

Annual Salary Weekly52/yr Biweekly26/yr Semi-Monthly24/yr Monthly12/yr
$40,000 $625 $1,249 $1,354 $2,707
$60,000 $915 $1,829 $1,982 $3,964
$80,000 $1,179 $2,357 $2,554 $5,108
$100,000 $1,430 $2,861 $3,099 $6,198
$150,000 $2,048 $4,097 $4,438 $8,876
$200,000 $2,676 $5,353 $5,799 $11,598

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday — 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month (often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Illinois, that difference is about $104 per check. Annual take-home is identical either way.

Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.

What's different about a Illinois paycheck

A flat 4.95% on almost everything

Illinois withholds the same rate on every dollar above your exemptions, which are set on Form IL-W-4, not your federal W-4. With only one rate, a bonus costs the same 4.95% in Illinois tax as the rest of your pay, so a $10,000 bonus paid on its own check comes to about $6,540 after the federal 22%, Illinois tax, and FICA.

No city income tax, even in Chicago

No Illinois city or county withholds income tax, so living in Chicago costs nothing extra on your paycheck compared with the suburbs. Your state withholding depends only on your pay and your IL-W-4.

An automatic retirement deduction you can switch off

Employers that have been in business at least two years and don't offer a retirement plan must enroll workers in My Illinois Savings, the state's program formerly called Secure Choice. Unless you opt out, 5% of your pay goes into a Roth IRA. Roth contributions come from after-tax pay, so they lower your take-home without lowering your tax.

Two minimum wages

The statewide minimum wage is $15.00 an hour, or $31,200 for a full-time year, about $25,850 take-home. Chicago is higher: $17.05 an hour from July 1, 2026 at employers with four or more workers, adjusted each July. Tipped workers can be paid 60% of the state minimum, and $12.96 in Chicago, as long as tips make up the difference.
