Estimate Your Take-Home Pay
2027 figures are projected. Federal brackets and the standard
deduction are computed from chained CPI-U through August 2026. The Social Security
wage base is the SSA's official figure. State figures carry 2026 values
except where a 2027 rate is already enacted, so state tax may be slightly
overstated. Official IRS figures publish in October.

Biweekly and semi-monthly are not the same thing. Biweekly means every other Friday —
26 paychecks a year, so two months each year contain three paydays. Semi-monthly means twice a month
(often the 15th and the last day) — 24 slightly larger paychecks. On a $40,000 salary in Iowa,
that difference is about $107 per check.
Annual take-home is identical either way.
Single filer, no pre-tax deductions. Divides annual take-home evenly; real paychecks vary slightly with withholding rounding and benefit deductions.
What's different about a Iowa paycheck
Withholding subtracts less than the return does
The 2026 withholding formula subtracts $13,000 a year for single employees, $19,500 for heads of household, and $26,000 for married employees whose spouse has no earnings, then takes 3.8% and subtracts the dollar allowances on your IA W-4. Your return subtracts the larger federal standard deduction, so a single employee at $75,000 has about $2,316 withheld against a tax of about $2,198. The gap comes back as a refund.
A new IA W-4 for 2026
Iowa revised its IA W-4 and withholding formula for 2026 to reflect the federal law changes. Employers may keep using an older form, but for anyone whose IA W-4 dates from 2023 or earlier they must convert its allowances at $40 each, so the Department of Revenue encourages employees to file a new one.
Bonuses at 3.8%
When your employer withholds federal tax on a bonus at the flat supplemental rate, Iowa withholds a flat 3.8%. A $10,000 bonus paid that way arrives as about $6,655 after the federal 22%, Iowa, Social Security, and Medicare. Paid together with regular wages, it goes through the normal formula instead.
The surtax comes at filing time
Iowa's withholding formula has no step for the school district surtax, which ranges from 0% to 20% of your Iowa tax depending on where you live. In a district with a surtax, expect a smaller refund, or a balance due, than the withholding alone suggests.
Minimum wage
Iowa's minimum wage is the federal $7.25 an hour. Full-time that is $15,080 a year, about $13,926 after taxes; with the federal standard deduction subtracted first, Iowa tax at that pay is $0.
For the annual picture, including capital gains, credits, and filing deadlines, see the Iowa income tax calculator.
